9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Atlantic ABC, Main Lodge | Diversity and Inclusivity in Municipalities Recognizing diversity and supporting inclusivity is important for all orders of government, but municipalities are directly engaged in the literal building of accessible and welcoming communities. Municipalities champion this responsibility to residents by creating accessible built environments, ensuring fair policing practices, and celebrating multicultural communities, to name just a few examples. Ensuring welcoming and inclusive local government is also important because it can present a first step into electoral politics for members of underrepresented groups. Local government provides an important space for conversations about equity and inclusion, whether these conversations be based on ability, race, gender identification, other aspects of identity, or intersections of them all. Many municipalities in Nova Scotia are developing Diversity and Inclusion Strategies to institutionalize recognition of diversity and reduce barriers to inclusivity. Much more work is necessary to ensure that all Nova Scotians enjoy a sense of belonging and see themselves represented among their elected municipal officials. This session will feature three panelists who will discuss different efforts to increase representation and inclusivity across Nova Scotia. Presenters: Councillor Andrew Murray, Town of Antigonish Councillor Mary Desmond, District of Guysborough Ms. Kenisha Gordon, Kings County Diversity and Inclusion Specialist |
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Atlantic ABC, Main Lodge | NSFM Organizational Change On November 30th and December 1st of 2021, the NSFM Board of Directors met to participate in a facilitated discussion. The purpose of this discussion was to reflect on how NSFM can more effectively accomplish its core goals. The organizational changes that the Board developed by consensus in this facilitated session have been shared with our members and consultations have taken place across the province for feedback. A vote by the members on the proposed changes is expected to take place in late May/early June, prior to the start of the current resolution process. This vote will take place in a Special Meeting of the Members. This session is meant to ensure that members are sufficiently informed so that they can be part of this change and participate in the new organizational structure. It is also meant to continue the process of gathering feedback on these proposed changes from members. Your opinion is important to us! |
